Conquering Negative Thoughts

“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:8‬ ‭

Welcome back y'all! I'm sure that you know by now that I like to keep it real with you guys. If I'm being 110% honest, I've had a real problem on my hands. I wish there was a quick fix to this issue, but like most problems, we would be less likely to depend on God if we could snap our fingers and have a solution to our issues. Anyways, here it is folks;

I am in a constant battle with my mind.

Am I the only one? There isn't a day that goes by that I don't have to fight negative thoughts pertaining to every area of my life. These thoughts try to drown out the good, and remind me of all of my short comings. Not only am I reminded of my shortcomings, but I also struggle with comparing my life to others who seem to have it all together.

After years of trying to demolish these thoughts on my own, I have recently (over the past year) decided that I no longer want to be bound by my own negativity, and started fighting back.

How? With the scripture above! Before we jump in, I think it's imperative to define the most important word in this scripture, and that is;

Fix : to direct ones eyes, attention, or mind steadily or unwavering toward

Now let's replace the work fix with definition in the scripture.

“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Direct, pay attention to, keep your mind steady or unwavering on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”

The first thing that I would like to point out is that this is an action, a command. This implies that we naturally will have negative thoughts, but we must make a conscious decision to direct our minds to

1. What is true

What does the word say is true about you?

2. Honorable & 3. Right

Do your thoughts honor God?

4. Pure

Are your thoughts constantly tainted with thoughts that aren't pure.

5. Lovely & 6. Admirable

Do you find yourself dwelling on hate towards others or yourself?

 Are your thoughts respectful?

These are questions that I ask myself daily.  I have to wake up everyday ready to fight, but I also have to be willing to be honest with myself. As you ask yourself these questions, pray that God will begin to speak to you, and point out the specific areas and thoughts that you need to focus on.

We are in this fight together, which is why l will be kicking off a 5 day breakdown to further discuss the battlefield of the mind!
