Damaris & Priscella | Vava Voom Curls
We are the Guillen sisters, born and raised in Brooklyn NYC. If you know us you’ll know that we are inseparable. We love traveling, dancing and trying out new food that we’ve never had before. We call it FOODIES. There are definitely things that make us different from one another. Priscella is the creative sister, & loves photography, while Damaris as a licensed massage therapist, is the health conscious sister. If we could chose a few words to describe ourselves they would be: loving, caring, the shoulder to lean on, generous, patient, and joyful.
Our natural hair journey started in 2006. Previously we were natural we used chemicals in our hair. After a few years of that we noticed the damage it was causing to our hair and had to stop immediately. It was definitely a learning processes, but totally worth it.
BE: Can you tell the readers a little about Vavavoom Curls?
Damaris: Vavavoom Curls was a idea we had for quite a while. But even before we even had our names we knew we wanted to encourage our followers to embrace there beauty and natural hair. Our name comes from us one day going to a shoe store literally after church. We both had our hair out and a sales associate approached us and said wow you girls are Vavavoom. We looked at each other and laughed. Went home to search the meaning of Vavavoom in urban dictionary and it said “something that looks really good”, and so we added curls at the end.
What was the inspiration behind V.V.C?
Priscella: The inspiration came when people in the street would randomly stop us to complement our curls. They would ask us how do we keep our hair looking nice and what products were our favorite. Thats when we decided we should open a social media platform to share our curly hair journey and lifestyle with people.
Were there any moments where you felt discouraged to contribute V.V.C?
Damaris: There has definitely been moments where I’ve said to my self why am I even doing this? Should I even continue doing this? - Living in this city can get overwhelming - where if you don’t carve out time or even have a plan for your day it will just go and then I will fall behind on what I should have done.I have moments where ideas start to flow and I get excited and there are moments where I have nothing creative flowing. But I try to remind the purpose behind Vavavoom Curls and get back on track despite how I am feeling.
If so what encouraged you to continue?
Damaris: What has encouraged me to continue Vavavoom Curls to be honest is peoples response to our Instagram page. Listening to what they say has been uplifting and moving. It really gives me joy and motivate me to continue. Were not only impacting/encouraging people around us but also being encouraged by them. At the end we all give and receive from each other and I love that.
What advice would you give to other female entrepreneurs ?
Priscella: The advice I would give to other female entrepreneurs is to start with what you have. celebrate small accomplishments, and keep hustling.
